French Phone Numbers
How to Say Them in Pairs

Updated 17 April 2026

When a French person tells you their phone number, they do not say it digit by digit as is common in American English. They group it in pairs of two digits and read each pair as a number. "06 12 34 56 78" becomes "zero six, douze, trente-quatre, cinquante-six, soixante-dix-huit" - not "zero-six-one-two-three-four-five-six-seven-eight".

This convention is deeply ingrained and applies to all French landlines and mobiles. The historical reason: French phone numbers have always been written and displayed in two-digit groups. The pairing makes numbers more memorable and flows better in speech.

The Pair Rule

06 12 34 56 78

Read as: 06 | 12 | 34 | 56 | 78

zero-six, douze, trente-quatre, cinquante-six, soixante-dix-huit

The first pair (the area code or network prefix) is always read as "zero" plus the single digit: zero-un (01), zero-six (06), zero-sept (07). This is because the leading zero is treated as a separate number, not as part of the pair.

When giving your number verbally: "Mon numero, c'est le zero-six, douze, trente-quatre, cinquante-six, soixante-dix-huit."

FAQ

How do French people read phone numbers?

In pairs. "06 12 34 56 78" is said as "zero six, douze, trente-quatre, cinquante-six, soixante-dix-huit". The first pair is often treated as "zero" plus the single digit (zero-six, zero-sept). This pairing makes numbers easier to remember and is a strict cultural convention.

What do French mobile numbers start with?

All French mobile numbers start with 06 or 07. Landlines start with 01-05 depending on the region. Numbers starting with 08 are special services. Numbers starting with 09 are VoIP internet telephony services.

Is it rude to read a French phone number digit by digit?

Not rude, but it marks you as non-native or as someone used to a different convention. French people will understand you, but the pair convention is so ingrained that breaking it sounds slightly odd. If you are giving your number to a French person, use pairs.
