French Numbers 1 to 100
Full Reference with Audio

Updated 17 April 2026

French numbers follow a straightforward pattern from 1 to 69. Numbers 1 to 16 are unique vocabulary words you must memorise. Numbers 17 to 19 follow the pattern dix-sept (ten-seven), dix-huit (ten-eight), dix-neuf (ten-nine). From 20 to 69, it is tens plus units with a hyphen. Then at 70, French switches to a base-20 system inherited from Celtic counting - soixante-dix (sixty-ten), quatre-vingts (four-twenties), quatre-vingt-dix (four-twenties-ten). These require you to do mental arithmetic, and they are the reason French numbers feel harder than Spanish or Italian.

1 to 10 - Memorise These

The core ten. Every number above 10 builds from these.

100 - Cent

Cent stands alone. Pluralises only when it ends a number and is more than one: deux cents, but deux cent vingt.

#FrenchIPAAudioNotes
100cent/sɑ̃/Cent (no article). "Deux cents" with s; "deux cent vingt" without.

Key Rules to Remember

The -et-un connector

Used for 21, 31, 41, 51, 61, 71 (vingt-et-un, trente-et-un... soixante-et-onze). Not used for 81 (quatre-vingt-un, not quatre-vingt-et-un).

Quatre-vingts loses its s

80 alone = quatre-vingts (with s). But 81, 82... = quatre-vingt-un, quatre-vingt-deux (no s because another number follows).

Mille never pluralises

Two thousand = deux mille (not deux milles). This is different from million and milliard which do pluralise.

Cent pluralises sometimes

200 = deux cents (s at end). 201 = deux cent un (no s because a number follows). 220 = deux cent vingt (no s).

Zero has an accent

Zéro (not zero). The accent on the e changes the pronunciation from /ze/ to /ze/ with a slightly more open vowel.
