Frequently asked

How do you say 20 in French?

Vingt. Pronounced /vɛ̃/ in isolation. The t is silent in isolation but voiced in liaison and compounds: vingt et un /vɛ̃.t‿e.oe~/, vingt ans /vɛ̃.t‿ɑ̃/.

How do you say 21 in French?

Vingt et un. The connector et joins vingt and un. With the 1990 rectifications you can also write vingt-et-un with hyphens; both are accepted by Larousse and the Academie francaise.

How do you say 22 in French?

Vingt-deux. The hyphen replaces the et connector from the unit two onwards. Same pattern for 23 (vingt-trois) through 29 (vingt-neuf).

Why is there no s on vingt in vingt et un?

Vingt only pluralises with s when it is multiplied (quatre-vingts = 80, four-twenties) and stands alone with no further units. In vingt et un it is a single twenty, not a multiplier, so no s appears.
